Where's the Party at?

After what has seemed like an eternity, it is time to pick up the proverbial pen and begin writing once again.

The year prior (affectionately known as 2010) brought with it a marathon of articles and blog posts like never before.  I was fortunate enough to be writing for The English Tea Store and for Examiner.com, in addition to this blog, and getting paid to do so.  By the end of 2010, however, the "mad tea party" became a "virtual" tea party, attended only by me and my computer.  The only tea time I was having, was the time I took to write about tea online.  All too often, I was only "enjoying" the cup or product that I was writing about, as I wrote about it. "Sharing" online is not the same as actually sharing in person.

I began to fall out of love.  I was no longer mad about tea, but I had become frantic about creating tea-based content. So much writing to keep up with, so little time. I was losing the purity of this simple pleasure. So to salvage my relationship with my love of tea, I had to let the writing go...

For me, tea is something to be shared with others.  I can think of no better custom that that of an afternoon tea party - stopping your day to enjoy tea and food and conversation,  I mean, what could be better???  Let there be Friendship and Laughter and Cake!

So while I haven't written about it, 2011 has become the Year of the Mad Tea Party.  At least once a week, a small party of friends and acquaintances shows up to my house to drink tea. Sometimes that includes lunch, sometimes we assemble tea projects and orders, sometimes there's baked goods and there's always music.  It's amazing what can happen with the littlest invitation - like asking others to drink some tea with you.

So to those of you who have come over to my house, have brought over friends, and have raised a mug of tea with me -- thank you.  Thank you for being part of the madness and for bringing back the Love.

Ain't it Keen?

I was pleased as punch when I got an invitation to be one of the first tea companies to be featured on Keen Tea Thyme's blogger-ific pastiches of all things & people TEA!

She did a great job taking the numerous details of this long and winding journey towards doing what I do and sharing it in a way that made me feel like I was reading about someone else.  Someone much cooler than me.  Someone I would like to have tea with...

Steeped in the New Year

2011 is going to be a special year.  Perhaps I'm superstitious about the date ending in two like numbers, or perhaps it's the fact that 2011 kicks off the second decade in the new millenium. But whatever the reason, there's always something new to talk about, a new tea to sip, a new pot or cup to use, a new cafe to check out, a new friend to meet....sometimes indulging in the small things helps us increase our perspective and our enthusiasm!

Recently my writings have been for other publications, and so in keeping with the New Year's theme for just this one last time, I'd like to share some links on this topic.

Spotlight: Real Men Drink Tea

Do men...."real men"....drink tea?  Why is it that there still is the lingering notion that tea drinking is a territory owned primarily by women.  Perhaps it became ingrained in the cultural mindset during the Prohibition Era of the 1920's, when teetotaling women led the Temperance Movement or perhaps it's simply that women overall gravitate towards nourishing self-care practices in larger numbers then men. (Enter any yoga class and you'll see what I mean)

However, all the recent trends here in America have been pushing against the stodgy uptight prudishness of lace doilies and more and more men are proudly pounding back mugs of tea and mixing a bit of testosterone-laden madness in their proclamations that "Yes, REAL MEN DRINK TEA!"

Macho Matcha - although the name and the blog's subtitle, Tea For Tough Guys, is decidedly male, the entry about the Matcha Facial belies the Tough-Guy moniker.  That being said, the very suggestion of men drinking and singing the praises to the wonders and health benefits of green tea is worthy enough to note.   **Follow him on Twitter @machomatcha

Mr Tea  - A Blog About Tea From A Regular Old Guy. This late-20's tea-loving cutie has a video-driven blog site that reviews teas. In homage to the iconic 80's figure "Mr T", he starts off every episode claiming "I pity the fool who don't drink tea!"   He ups ante with his regular-guy approach to talk about and exploring tea, tea companies, accessories...and don't forget to try out his Earl Grey MarTEAni (I know I will!)

My favorite Manly Blog Entry:  Episode #18: All You Need To Know About Tea To Get Girls

ManTeas - Going full tilt with the idea that Real Men Drink Tea is ManTeas.  From the whimsically suggestive logo with the tea balls to the list of the manliest teas known to man.  That's right. No flowers, no potpurri-smelling blends and definitely no rose petals!

Favorite Video:  Tea with Mike Tyson  It's every bit as surreal as it sounds....

Manly teas include: Beer Tea, Jalepeno Tea and Maple Bacon Tea.  I just ordered the Bacon Tea and will review this mad blend when I get it!   **Follow on Twitter @manteas

I'd like to thank my tea-gulping brothers for their own brand of manly madness.  It's always fun to meet both the men and women who make up the ever-growing CommuniTEA.

Travels From a Tea Cup Goes Camping

Growing up as a kid, my favorite time of the year was always summertime. It wasn’t just the fact that school was out, although I’m sure that had something to do with it. However, summertime meant that the family got to go camping. As far back as I can remember, the whole family would pack up the tent and rough it in the woods. My dad would lead the charge, giving us all jobs to do – the five of us working like a well-oiled machine, so that in no time flat the campsite was set up and the fun could begin.

Now my favorite part about camping was, and still is, the campfire. Making the campfire, cooking over the campfire, singing songs and playing games around the campfire – it was a circle that brought us together as a family. I’ve started to suspect that our going camping was simply an excuse to sit around the fire. Even though I am older and out of the house, my Dad and I still manage to go camping once a year. Setting up the tent and building that campfire still gives me the same thrill as when I was a child....

Tea + Happiness = Good Health

Yup, that’s it.... I guess scientists and researchers have found out what many of you reading this have already found to be true.

The formula for good health boils down to tea. Well…tea and happiness – but seeing how tea makes people happy, it's an easy equation to master.

Whether sipped alone in private and perhaps sacred or reflective moments of quietude or shared socially with a friend or group of friends complete with lots of conversation - drinking tea tends to make people happier.
How could it not? While many people wait until they are sick before reaching for a trusty box of tea, drinking Tea makes you feel good all the time. I’ve often said that “tea is a massage for your insides”. It soothes your throat. It eases headaches. It soothes tired bodies and aching muscles. With its warmth, tea loosens up your joints and gets you going. Yet, at the same time, tea calms you down, settles your mind, and softens your nerves. It is in this capability that clarity, inner peace and the expansion of happiness infuses into the heart of the attentive sipper.
So there you have it – tea is liquid massage.
And who doesn’t feel better (and happier) after getting a massage?

Drink your way to a happier health!

Going for the Green (tea) on St Pattys

What better day to talk about all things green than on St Patrick’s Day! And while some will opt for pitchers of green beer tonight, I’ll be seeing green in pots of tea! If ever I was to find a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, I’m sure it would be a tea pot of the most beautiful golden hued liquor of a very satisfying green tea.

You needn’t be Irish to celebrate St Patty’s Day, nor do you need the luck of the Irish to reap the healthy benefits of green tea. Luckily there is a lot of research these days which verifies what people have known for centuries – that green tea is good for your health and your health is worth its weight in gold!

Mad Pots! on the Tea Review Blog

Most every tea lover must turn to the web to purchase teas - especially as there are so many teas available. As such, having a reliable site to review teas becomes of utmost importance. Recently, The Tea Review Blog has added Mad Pots of Tea! to the roster of reviewed tea companies.

The first review was for Lemon Trance, which is based on my favorite metal rock band.

"Tea and rock n roll! Why not?...So when I read that this was a tea blend based on a metal/rock band called Spiral Trance it naturally piqued my curiosity. Were they any good? And beyond that, was their TEA any good? After all if you are going to have a tea inspired by your metal rock band, it better stand up to some REAL criticism!...."

READ THE REST OF THE REVIEW HERE!

After scoring this review, the founder of the Tea Review Blog site had me create her a tea. Quite a daunting task for someone who has tried and rated over 300 teas...

The result was the blend, Fleur de Grey.

"My favorite all-time overall tea. Why? Well, I suppose because it was blended just for me, based on my Personali-TEA profile at Mad Pots of Tea!....I can’t say that I honestly could have thought up any better blend for me than this. It’s fabulous, it’s fantastic, it’s FREAKING AWESOME! ....I love this tea so much that it’s the ONLY tea I’ve drank for 4 days straight. I’m already out and have ordered more! ..."

I'd like to thank the Tea Review Blog for the support. It's been great to get my teas professionally reviewed and this has created some welcomed new buzz for my company. As I create teas based on people's personalities and each tea blend is unique to the person, it is especially exciting that other people are discovering these teas.

I have found numerous interesting teas on their site and I hope that you actively use, read, and comment on their site as a show of support. It's a lot of tea to have to drink and they do a great job of sorting through it all.

How Do I Love Tea?....

How do I love tea? Let me count the ways…..

The love affair that many people have with drinking tea is one that has grown slowly over time. What starts off as a casual acquaintance blossoms into an amorous fascination. There have been many lists created with reasons as why you ought to drink more tea, but love has so little to do with logic.

Fall in Love over and over and over – There are so many teas to try, that this romance never need grow tiresome. Should your love’s light start to dim, rekindle the flame with a new type of tea or a new tea company.

Tea Brews Lasting Friendships
- the next time your friend is sick, don’t just bring them tea – show them how much you care by brewing them some tea. It doesn’t take long, it just takes love.

Tea Loves the Planet - Imagine fields of tea plants assisting in creating breathable oxygen. Tea is the 2nd most consumed beverage (after water) and that means lots of plants, exchanging carbon dioxide and supporting a healthier environment. Mother Earth says to drink your tea!

Do you Steepster?

Just when you think you couldn't possibly spend any more time sharing your thoughts, your pictures, your videos, your ideas, your tweets, your never ending stream of status updates -- along comes ah yet another social networking site -- but this one is for the Tea Lovers!

Have you checked out Steepster?
Steepster is a community of avid tea drinkers who share what teas they own and which teas they've tried. If you love tea then chances are you may already be on this site, which is a blend of Twitter + LinkedIn + FaceBook. It's an online taster's journal.

If you spend any amount of time reading through the reviews, it beautifully illustrates the idea that taste is subjective and it's only through your own experience that you can determine which would be "your cup of tea". One person's criticism can easily be another person's praise. All in all you can sometimes gauge a consensus and learn more about a tea that you might then consider purchasing.

If you haven't checked it out, it's certainly a fun site to know. I recently posted a Tasting Note for Climber's High tea from The Tea Spot.

I was surprised to find that someone had indeed posted 3 reviews of one of my own Signature blends: Silent Night. I wasn't expecting to see Mad Pots of Tea! listed under the Tea Companies. Any additional reviews of my teas would be greatly appreciated if you are reading this and have tried any of my teas.....(thank you in advance, and please send me a link if you post a review).

I'm just excited knowing that tea geeks have created their very own place to socialize!

Finding Ways to Connect

T'is the season for remembrance... and recently I was fondly remembering how much easier blogging was when it was the only en masse communication which I used to talk about my favorite subject.

With the advent of social networking, as fun and exciting as it is, we have more places to go, more things to read, and more ways to connect, that a longer blog post often gets lost in the shuffle of numerous tea-related tweets and Steepster posts, and Myspace or FaceBook status updates. (For the record, the FB people will not allow Madam Potts to have a personal Facebook Page - both a blessing and a curse....we are however working on this) I've had to take a break from my virtual existence in order to spend some real-time one-on-one with my friends and family. I've been downing cups of Tulsi Tea in order to get through it all.

I received an awesome tea swap this year from the Tea Gschwendner -- 2 types of Earl Grey, Imperior and Earl Grey's Lady Violet, which I have been brewing every morning. My swappee had no idea that I have recently been on an Earl Grey kick -- it has been by far my #1 choice recently. So I guess it will be awhile before I run out. And one of my dearest friends gave me a tea timer that looks like a tiny tea pot - sooo cute! (see photo!)

Coming soon: New Year's Resolutions, and interview with Jason Witt of Spirituality of Tea, introductions of the newest Mad Pots of Tea! PersonaliTEA blends,Talks about Tea and Music and Cocktails and of course more Mad Pots & Random Art.

One of my resolutions that I am making personally is to invite someone new to tea every month. That may be in my home, at a tea cafe, but out of all the ways to connect about tea, the best way is to do so while actually enjoying it.

So let there be tea parties and friends and good conversations and fun times to look back on...

Madam Potts Examines All Things Tea

At a time that people are reflecting on being thankful, I must say that I am truly grateful that the response I get to my teas, my passion for teas, my custom blends and now my writings has been steadily growing.

I make and share tea because I simply love it so much. The richness that sharing tea with others has brought to my life is invaluable beyond compare. The people I have met, the trips I have made the journeys on which I have embarked upon all because of steeped leaves is a book that one day I shall pen.

Recently, I have been picked up by the ever-growing popular site www.Examiner.com as the Monmouth County Tea Examiner.

The Examiner is a portal for "All Things Local" in cities & states across the country. This site relies on paid Examiners to bring news and reviews of various topics -- and there on Examiners writing on every topic! Especially fun is the Food & Drink section.

Writers are paid based on the amount of traffic driven to the articles they write, so I am asking my readership to support my efforts as the Shore Region Tea Examiner.

My First Article can be found here: After Dinner Delight

Check out the stories, visit my posted Link Lists, share this all with your friends and family....and by all means please send me emails, comments and feedback!

Thank You All for Being a part of the Mad, Mad CommuniTEA!

The Big Steep

Often I am asked about the best way to steep tea. And what’s best depends on what type of tea you are drinking, what kind of equipment you own (or are willing to buy) and what fits most into your lifestyle.

I've written an extensive article on this subject as a guest post on The English Tea Store blog.

How Sweet It Is!

It never ceases to surprise me how many people apologize for wanting to put sugar in their tea, as if admitting a serious tea-drinking faux pas. I’ve always invited my guests to do what makes them comfortable and to drink their tea in any fashion they feel most pleasing. Still I get meek apologies as if they feel that sugar in tea is just plain wrong. It got me thinking, is sweetening one's tea a low-brow act of tasteless vulgarity?

Summer's Over, Time for Tea

After a long hot summer, the rain is here and around the magic kitchen, that means one thing: time for tea! In fact, Hurricane Hannah is doing her part to water my garden as I type this...

It's been a great summer of beaches and hikes and lots of iced tea. Talking of which...

I'd like to thank Liz Brenna of Ben & Jerry's for contacting me about my blog about TeaZers. Sure, I know that the "serious tea drinker" probably had a good chuckle at my B&J's Iced Tea post, but it is a rare opportunity to meld my favorite things and make them relevent on this blog. While I have yet to try one of these concoctions, she emailed me and had this to say:

..."What a cool blog! I drink a ton of green tea everyday, and am a tea lover myself. I love your angle on tea and eliminating its "stuffy" rap.

The scoop on TeaZers: Made with white tea, ginger, & hibiscus, TeaZers come in two ways; Iced or blended. The blended version is made on the rocks with lemonade and Mango Mango sorbet. They are available in participating scoop shops and are really yummy. I

f you'd like to know anything else, let me know. :)
In the meantime, keep up all the good work on your blog!!

Best, Liz"

Some other things you might notice is that Mad Pots of Tea now has it's own logo! A big thank you to the bottom of my pot to Annette White. (as I learn more about coding around the rigid Blogger templates, there will continue to be small cosmetic changes...) This is just one of many graphic design accessories that have been created for Madam Potts and her Mad Pots of Tea!

Good things really are beginning to brew and I am one step closer to creating a fuller and more functional website where sippers can meet up with other sippers and create their own PersonaliTEAs!
